Our Vision
My Omnilocks, Hair with Endless Looks, is an interactive board book, with bold cutouts, celebrating the power and versatility of brown girls’ hair! From braids, to curls, to locs, this book uses rhyming sentences to take you on a vivid journey of the beautiful styles that make the lovely locks so special!
The My Omnilocks board book is super inclusive of the zero to five years age range. 90% of brain development happens between the ages of 0 to 5 years old, including early development of self confidence. My Omnilocks is a tangible reminder to little brown girls everywhere that their hair is a beautiful and powerful gift that should be proudly embraced.
Our Story
My Omnilocks was born after a conversation between Shonda and her 9 year old daughter Zya. Zya wanted her hair straightened for an event and her mom told her that due to the humid weather and her high level of activity, it wouldn’t stay straight, therefore it wasn’t worth the effort. Zya had a moment of feeling defeated because her hair wouldn’t stay straight like most of her friends' hair. Shonda immediately noticed Zya’s disposition and began telling Zya why she is so blessed to have hair that has superpowers! Her hair can take so many different forms and that should be celebrated. Zya’s disposition went from a look of defeat to one of sincere pride! Shonda followed divine guidance and decided to share that same message with little brown girls everywhere!
About the Author Shonda Knight
A strategic communicator and veteran journalist of nearly two decades in television news, Shonda Knight’s experience includes behind the anchor desk and as part of senior newsroom management teams.
Named a Distinguished Alum of Florida Agricultural and Mechanical Univeristy in 2011, Knight also served as an adjunct professor at Florida State University for eight years. She has former students now working as anchors, sportscasters, reporters and producers in television markets across the country.
The award-winning journalist currently serves as the Executive Director of Community and Media Relations for the Leon County Sheriff’s Office in Tallahassee, Florida, working to strengthen relationships between law enforcement and the community.
Knight is the mother of two beautiful children, Zya and Zekiah. Nine year old Zya is the inspiration behind Knight’s inaugural publication.
Knight gives much of her time to non profit organizations, working to transform communities. She has a special passion for broadening the perspectives of children with limited scopes of the possibilities for their future. My Omnilocks is a true passion project for Knight.
Meet the Illustrator
Arielle Rosier is an up and coming visual and graphic design artist. Rosier is a University of South Florida graduate with a degree in Integrated Advertising and Public Relations and a certification in Visualization and Design. She currently works as a Media Specialist. Rosier has provided illustrations for several online patrons including illustrations for an influencer's wedding coloring book. Rosier's work embodies the values of family, friendship and personal growth. In her spare time, she loves sketching new characters and bringing them to life. Those who are interested can learn more about Arielle Rosier by following her Instagram account under the name "arosiesketchbook".
